The anionic borohydride ligand, [BH4], is known to bind to metals by means of unidentate, bidentate, and tridentate binding modes, making it a useful ligand for the achievement of high coordination numbers in inorganic and organometallic complexes. Combinations of borohydride ligands with metal centers having large atomic radii often leads to complexes with coordination numbers higher than 12. Although 14-coordinate actinide complexes such as [U(BH4)4(thf)2] have been previously reported, no complex with a coordination numbers higher than 14 has been unambiguously characterized. Due to the low sensitivity of X-rays for the detection of hydrogen atoms and the domination of the heavy metal in the scattered X-ray data, neutron diffraction data is invaluable for accurately characterizing such complexes.
